KNIFE Toronto

DEEP CUTS: Alma

Deep Cuts is a love letter to food, culture, and Toronto’s cuisine, celebrating the careers of chefs who have made the city their home. With Deep Cuts: Alma, we wanted to deliver a product combining high production values from traditional media, fast and engaging pacing suitable for YouTube and social media, and the vintage, poetry-in-motion feel that we have developed as KNIFE’s signature look.

With no storyboard or shot list, I chose to shoot the main coverage with two cameras in a vérité style. The interview frames were developed with an intent to portray a soft, highly naturalistic look that reflects the authentic and earnest nature of the series. By its nature, this was a piece that would find its identity in the edit. Our guest for this episode delivered an exceptional interview, rich with emotion and impact. Seeing this, we decided to anchor the narrative around her story and the banter between her and our recurring subject. Sorting through the footage, it felt as though there was still context and structure missing from what we had, so I wrote up a script and shot a supplementary interview of our recurring subject, placing him squarely in the role of the series host and firmly establishing a proper beginning, middle, and end to the piece.

Ethica: CloudAccess Stories with GenesysTel

With this testimonial for Ethica, we wanted to blend the standard motifs of a tech company with a tasteful feel in order to visually emphasize how CloudAccess is a powerful tool for the global digital economy. With the partner for this video being in Australia, it was important to be able to speak to the similarities and differences between the market in Canada and Australia.

To do this, we shot in an office that is a part of the core Toronto financial district skyline, hoping to point out to the lively and urban downtown. However, our shooting day turned out to be very foggy, making it difficult to clearly see the skyline out the window. I chose to instead utilize the leading lines and lit areas of the office space to create depth, detail, and interest in the background of the frame through reflections against the window - allowing a dirtying of the foggy night sky. To achieve the "tasteful" part of the objective, I added some splashes of warm light to the room to create balance and counter the overwhelmingly cold tone of the frame, and shifted the shadows subtly towards green in the grade, moving the image just a little bit away from the tech blue look.
